Heather’s Picks: Top 10 Montreal Cafés

1.  Café Lali, 1850, rue Notre-Dame O.

Funky Griffintown mother/daughter business is part café part Art Gallery. Café Lali serves delicious coffee, local treats and healthy offerings including Mandy’s salads and vegan truffles. Carré des Artistes represents local and international artists and hosts events including vernissages and book launches. Great Americano, cappucino and chocolate shots!

2. Cafe Crew, 360 St. Jacques, Old Montreal
Breathtaking atmosphere at Cafe Crew, nestled in an old bank in Old Montreal. Great coffee, delicious pastries (despite there no oven to heat the croissants!) This place oozes nostalgia and is buzzing with people gathering and working on their laptops. Reserved meeting spaces available. A must-see.

3. Café Nomade in Boxotel, 175  rue Ontario Est

Situated in the ultra modern Boxotel hotel, Café Nomade offers specialty coffees, quick breakfast, healthy lunch, snacks and a 5 à 7 atmosphere. It over looks Gallery 175B which hosts exhibitions of contemporary Art. We enjoyed a tasty grilled cheese sandwich and cappuccino.  Steps away from St. Denis theatre district.

4. Café Osmo, 51 Sherbrooke West

Situated in the iconic Notman House (contemporary office space for Start-ups) on Sherbrooke just west of St. Laurent. Very funky atmosphere. Comfy basket chairs. Cozy book nook. Great coffee, snacks and sandwiches. Catering.

5. La Bête à Pain, 195 Young, Griffintown

Funky atmosphere open concept bakery café in the heart of Griffintown. Spacious and bright. Best croissants in Montreal. Large variety of breads and salads, sandwiches and food to eat in or take away. Attached to Atelier Must concept store for home decor.


6. La Croissanterie Figaro, 5200 Hutchinson, Outremont
Established since 1989 La Croissanterie houses an enchanting Art Nouveau decor and extensive menu. I used to frequent the cafe in my street vending days of the early 90s for their Croque Monsieur. Best almond croissants in Montreal and large variety of other pastries.

7. Mamie Clafoutis, 2660 Notre-Dame Street West
Steps away from the Lionel Groulx metro, Atwater Market and Lachine canal. Great atmosphere and coffee. Their pistachio croissants are spectacular.


8. Café Plume, 123 Mont Royal, Plateau Mont Royal
Walls adorned with Art magazines and original art (temporary exhibitions). Great coffee. Steps away from the Mont Royal monument. Serves breakfast, lunch and pastries.

9. Tommy, 200 Notre Dame West, Old Montreal
A blend of modern design, mid-century furniture and victorian architecture. Variety of pastries, including cronuts. Also serves tapas and drinks. In the heart of Old Montreal.

Top 10 Coffee Shops in Montreal

10. Kafein, 1429A Bishop
Across from Concordia University. Perfect student cafe. Specialty coffees and a wide variety of teas. Yummy cookies. Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Cool space downstairs for working on your laptop and live music events.
